August 23, 2010 - Backpacking the White Mountains
On August 19th, eight members of the MOC met up with six members of the AOC for an adventure in the
White Mountains of New Hampshire. Each member of the group averaged about 15 miles on rocky terrain, including going
up the famous Tuckerman's Ravine and Mt. Washington. We gained about 4,000 ft of elevation in total and lost about 3,000 ft. It's a trip I'll not soon forget. The group was fun, and it was a view-rewarding challenge.
The huts and centers run by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) are a great way to see the presidential range by foot. Before and after the backpacking,
I was able to fit in some sightseeing in Boston, MA.
July 25, 2010 - Hagerstown Sprint Triathlon
I can now call myself a triathlete! My first attempt ever, and I opted into one with a shorter overall distance. I participated in the 90+ degree heat with over two dozen friends and their acquaintances
in Hagerstown, MD, about 12 miles away from the Appalachian Trail. Over 350 people in
total participated in the annual event. I hit the pool for a 300-meter (6 lap or 12 length swim), followed by an 11-mile bike ride, and a 3.1-mile (5K) run. My total time of 1:56:04 was better than my approximted
first time completion of anywhere between 2 to 2.5 hours. And, bottom line is...I did it!
May 22, 2010 - Warrior Dash Southeast
Participated in the third race of the nine-city stop of the Warrior Dash (course altered a bit from online map) in
Mountain City, GA with about five dozen folks from the Atlanta Outdoor Club
(AOC). I didn't really go for speed as much as for fun...which is reflected in my time
of 39:08.85 (4857 place of approximately 5500 on Saturday's race day). It was roughly the distance of a 5k with 11 obstacles. Photos from
race day and
camping throughout the weekend
at nearby Black Rock State Park campground.
I'll also be participating in the Warrior Dash Mid-Atlantic
in North Central Maryland on Saturday, October 9th. There are some, but limited,
spaces left for registrations for the October race, if you'd like to join me and the gang from the Maryland Outdoor Club (MOC).
October 10, 2009 - Another 15.5% Down!
My third 5K this year, and I did it in 34:01 in cool, 60-degree weather. My goal was to run the whole thing and no walking. No time goal. Sadly, I did not run the whole thing. I walked
four short legs. But, that's because I pushed myself a little too hard. Should have just slowed down!!! Anyway, that's a 15.5% improvement over my August race.
August 9, 2009 - Improved by 20%
My first 5K, I walked in March. Baltimore Shamrock 5K, mostly downhill or flat, in cool (40's) misty weather. Result was 50:12. Completed my second
5K in 93-degree heat (felt like 100) at 6 PM at Boordy. Result was 40:15. My goal was 10% improvement (5 minutes). Man did I blow that out of the water: 20% improvement (10 minutes)!
Although I'll never make that percentage improvement again, it gives me hope to keep getting better. I'm starting a new
Races page to store my results.
July 27, 2009 - Taking Up Yet Another Sport
In the past twelve months, I've taking up indoor climbing, skiing, SCUBA, and geocaching, in addition to all the sports I already did!
Well, starting at the end of July, I am running now too. I'll be in my second 5k in a couple of weeks, and would like to run a portion of it.
Wondering what adventure sport or activity will come next...
April 6, 2009 - Amy Starts New Job
After two years with USinternetworking (USi), an AT&T company, I have moved on to a new job as the
Senior Project Manager for
Go
Forward Media in Columbia, MD. In this role, I will be managing launching interactive projects (web sites, e-mail newsletters, webcasts,
podcasts, social media and networking campaigns, and much more) and on product development. My new commute is about 3.5 miles from my house.
I'm also working with some former Cygnus Business Media coworkers and really enjoying the clients, vendors, projects so far!
